【趣味&一言/Hobbies and Interests】
My
interests in intercultural communication are personal as well as professional, due
to my intercultural experiences while living in various places, such as England
(my birthplace), Colombia, Spain, Scotland, Okinawa and Niigata, and learning
about the varieties of language and culture in each of these places. I found
learning to communicate in Spanish especially rewarding while living in
Colombia and Spain, and I am now constantly striving to improve my Japanese
language skills.
As
for other cultural pursuits, I enjoy reading novels and poems, visiting art
galleries and going to the theatre, opera and ballet. In fact, I majored in
music at my first university (Edinburgh, Scotland), and I used to play the
cello in various orchestras and small groups and used the piano for
composition. I also learned to play a few songs on the Okinawan sanshin when I
was an ALT in Okinawa. Although I have no time to play these instruments these
days, I still listen to a wide range of classical, jazz, rock and Latin
American music, as well as music from various other parts of the world.
Although
I am not a sporty type, I also find pleasure in getting healthy exercise and
fresh air through walking, running, swimming and skiing. I love almost all
Japanese cuisine (especially sushi, soba and tempura, and even natto!) as well
as Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian, Spanish and Mexican food.
