1.Amount of Grant Requested
The first year of the three-year project
2.Project Objectives and Target Audience
Our target audience is teachers of social studies at primary, junior high and high schools in the Hokuriku area including Niigata, Toyama, and Nagano Prefectures, Japan. Our general objective is to enhance their understanding of the United States so that they can effectivly teach "America" in classroom situations. This objective is based on the assumption that it is quite important in education as well in view of the current U.S.-Japan relationship. More specificaiiy, on the basis of the increase of those teachers' knowledge of America, we aim at developing teaching materials for social studies which contribute to deepening the understanding of America in the field of social studies education at junior high schools and teaching of geography and history and teaching of civics at high schools in Japan.
